Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital
Coimbatore Medical College is one of the leading government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, India. It is located in Avinashi Road in the city of Coimbatore,TamilNadu ,India , about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from Coimbatore International Airport. The college was established in 1966 after G D Naidu, a scientist from an industrial family of the city, donated the 153 acres of land to the Tamil Nadu state government under the Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. The college is attached to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) CMCH is located on Trichy Road near Lanka Corner and was established in 1909 during the British Raj
The college offers various courses in the field of medical science, such as MBBS, MD, MS, DM, M.Ch, and other Para Medical courses. The college has a rich history and a reputation for excellence in medical education and research.
Our Hospital have received Award from Tamil Nadu State government for best performance in Organ Donation.
Timeline of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital:
- 1908 – foundation stone laid by Lord Ampthill, Governor of Madras
- 14 July 1909 – The hospital was inaugurated by Governor of Madras
- 1 April 1912 – The government of Madras Province took over the hospital administration from the municipality of Coimbatore
- 13 August 1959 – Golden Jubilee celebrations of district headquarters hospital, Coimbatore was inaugurated by his excellency Sri Bishnuram Medhi, Governor of Madras, and presided by the honourable Sri Manickavelu, Minister of Health and Revenue, Madras State
- 1966 – The Coimbatore Medical College was started
- 24 November 1969 – The Directorate of Medical Education took over administration of the hospital and renamed it as Coimbatore Medical College Hospital
- July 2009 – June 2010 – Centenary year of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital
The college was affiliated to Madras University and was later transferred to Bharathiar University. Subsequently, it was affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.
The College has 30 departments with well-equipped laboratories, libraries (including e-Library), classrooms, skill lab, dedicated fully functional Multidisciplinary research unit and other facilities. The college also has individual hostel for boys and girls, canteen, sports and yoga, auditorium and transport facility. The college has dedicated and qualified faculty who are experts in their respective fields. The college also invites guest lecturers and eminent personalities from various medical institutions and organizations to enhance the learning experience of the students. The college and hospital campus is student friendly with adequate anti-ragging measures.
Our Hospital is functioning with 1470 beds, catering to the needs of peoples of around four to five districts surrounding Coimbatore and acting as a referral centre. Apart from providing routine tertiary care services our hospital has a dedicated Regional Toxicology -Training centre, TAEI ward, Dialysis unit, Haemophilia Treatment centre, Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy treatment centre, Cath-Lab, operation theatre blocks, DEIC unit.
The college has an intake capacity of 200 students per year for the MBBS course. The college follows the CBME curriculum prescribed by NMC. The Course Covers Various Subjects Such As Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics And Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Anesthesiology, Etc.
The college offers postgraduate courses in MD and MS in various specializations such as Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Paediatrics, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radio-diagnosis, Anesthesiology, Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine. The admission to these courses is based on the NEET PG conducted by the NTA. The college has an intake capacity of 121 students per year for the MD/MS courses.
The college offers super speciality courses in DM and M.Ch. in various specializations such as Cardiology, Neurology, Medical Gastroenterology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery,Medical Oncology,Surgical Oncology. The admission to these courses is based on the NEET SS conducted by the NTA. The college has an intake capacity of 24 students per year for the DM/M.Ch. courses.
In addition to the above specialities the hospital also has round the clock services in nephrology, urology, blood bank with plasmapheresis unit, laboratory, pharmacy, casualty, ICU, NICU, PICU, SICU, labour ICU.
